“[I liked] the organization of the material as a hybrid text without the heavy emphasis on public speaking, the inclusion of topics such as health communication and technology in communication, and the author's focus on a relational perspective.”

"Communication in Everyday Life' is a well-written and comprehensive text for introductory communication courses, and a must for learning about communication in institutions with separate public-speaking courses."

“I like the relational approach—communicating in and understanding relationships could be the most important stuff our students learn.”
Dale Burke

“This text, better than others I have reviewed, is a more comprehensive review of the field and introduces students to the gamut of the discipline—this is a true introduction to communication in everyday life.”
Jerry E. Fliger

“It was definitely engaging, and every sentence made me want to continue….This text is very organized, easily understood, has great pictures (with text that relates the picture with what is being taught)…. I love how [this book] relates to the reader.”

Communication in Everyday Life has been beneficial for students covering the module Communication and Interpersonal skills. It has provided an insight into how people communicate in different situations and groups, allowing opportunities for students to reflect on their own communications styles and behaviours.

The writing is clear, the points well made, and it is written by someone who considered an authority... what more could you ask from a text?

I think this is a great textbook, but in the end I decided that it would be too expensive for our students, if you take into account that this is only a 3sp course, and that many students have to pay for the textbooks themselves. However, next year this course has 6sp in the program, so if I'm still teaching the course then, I would reconsider adopting it .

Many introductory communication books either spend too much time on theory or too much time in one particular field (I.E. interpersonal or oral speech). I like this book's broad explanation of human communication and how it practically plays out in their lives today. I hope it will expose my students to the many ways we communicate and how we study these branches.

Communication in Everyday Life is the first survey of communication textbook to explore fundamental concepts, theories, and skills with a thematic integration—the relational perspective—aimed at helping students apply the material to their own lives. This book provides students with a strong foundation in communication concepts, theory, and research, while helping them master practical communication skills, such as listening and critical thinking, using technology to communicate, understanding nonverbal communication, creating persuasive strategies, and managing group conflict. Ideal for 21st-century classrooms, this text provides up-to-date insight into the communication topics students increasingly want and need.
