Mental Illness and Crime

An interdisciplinary, integrative approach toward mental illness–related criminal and violent behaviors

August 2014 | 592 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc
Mental Illness and Crime comprehensively synthesizes and critically examines what is currently known about the relationship of mental illness and individual psychiatric disorders, in particular with criminal, violent, and other forms of antisocial behavior. The book integrates scholarship from psychology, psychiatry, clinical neuroscience, criminology, and law when presenting explanations for and etiologies of mental illness–related criminal and violent behaviors. Moreover, the book provides the reader with a diagnostic understanding of mental disorders across various classification systems, including the current DSM-5 and ICD-10. In addition, the authors critically examine what is known about the treatment and social implications of this body of research, including its practical applications within the criminal justice system. Unique to the field, this text will contribute to a better understanding of criminality and violence and move society toward a greater acceptance of individuals with these illnesses.

This is a very good book which covers a wide range of mental health conditions and their links to offended behaviour. There is very good use of case studies to set the scene, good tables at end of sections reporting the crimes and profiles/symptoms demonstrated of offenders. This is also detailed and well structured and very useful for undergraduates

A useful text looking at ideas of mental ill health with criminality. Good links with specific diagnoses and critiques of treatements. Probably more from a medical point of view, but useful to social workers

The book Mental Illness and Crime is a definitive resource – not only for students in the field of criminology, psychology and forensic sciences, but also for general readers and mental health professionals.
Over 13 chapters, the book does not only present original research that to date has not been published, but also integrates viewpoints for a more thorough understanding of human behaviour and law.
Schug and Fradella have certainly succeeded in creating a comprehensive overview that combines the clinical viewpoint with the theoretical
I will not adopt this book for my course “Forensic Psychology” only because this book does not cover much of the material I am covering in my course. Nevertheless, as a lecturer I will definitely use it to expand my own knowledge of the field.
