Journal of Asthma & Allergy Educators (JAAE) is a bimonthly peer-reviewed journal intended to serve as a reference source for asthma and allergy management and patient education. As the official journal of the Association of Asthma Educators (AAE), it publishes original articles that relate to aspects of patient care and education, clinical practice and/or research, and the multidisciplinary profession of asthma and allergy education as represented by nurses, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, physicians, physicians assistants, pharmacists, and health psychologists, among others. JAAE publishes original research, literature reviews, perspectives in practice, and continuing education articles. General topics include

JAAE publishes original research, literature reviews, perspectives in practice, continuing education articles, case reports, and articles that fit the categories listed below.

Clinical Pearl: provide a brief description of the problem/educational dilemma, present clinical pearl, and provide explanation of how clinical pearl enhances patient education. No abstract required for this column. Page limit is 1-2 pages.

Clinical Care Highlight: provides readers with a general overview of a clinical topic. The topic should be aimed at improving clinical knowledge and practice. The manuscript should include:

  • Introduction
  • Brief review of topic
  • Conclusion/importance to asthma and allergy educators
  • References

Medication/Product Showcase: articles that review a certain medication/class of medication or product. These should include pivotal study findings, side effects, advantages, disadvantages and possibly contact information if it is a product.

JAAE Processes, Protocols, & Practice: Please provide an abstract and a brief description of the problem/issue. Explain the solution and process for implementation, and provide outcomes if available or plans to measure outcomes if not available. Include list references. EDITORIAL POLICIES

Manuscripts will be critically reviewed by an editor with appropriate independent referees from the Editorial Board and other expert resources. Manuscripts are considered with the stipulation that they are submitted solely to JAAE and that no part of the submission has previously appeared elsewhere. Where questions exist, authors should submit copies of material that has appeared elsewhere. Statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications appearing in the journal are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the editors and publisher. The editors and publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. Neither the editors nor the publisher guarantee, warrant, or endorse any product or service advertised in this publication, nor do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer of such product or service.

DIRECTIONS FOR SUBMISSION

Go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jaae. You do not need to mail paper copies of your manuscript. Click on the "Check for Existing Account" button at the bottom of the opening page. If you do not already have an account, then create one by clicking on the "Create an Account" button. You then will be able to submit your manuscript. Click on “Author Center.” Follow the on-screen instructions carefully.

You will be asked to upload at least 2 documents when you submit a manuscript: a title page and a main document, in addition to uploading separate documents for each figure. This journal does not accept Microsoft WORD 2007 documents at this time. Please use WORD’s “Save As” option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

The title page should include the (1) title, (2) author names, degrees, affiliations, and contact information (name, address, e-mail address, and phone number), (3) author disclosure or conflict of interest information, (4) Grant and other acknowledgments.

The main document should not include the author’s name anywhere on the manuscript as this will be used for blind-peer review. The main document should include: (1) title, (2) abstract, (3) key words, (4) text, (5) references, (6) tables and table captions, (7) figure captions (figure files should be uploaded as separate files and not be included in the manuscript main document).

Please do not include author names on any pages of the manuscript, as the manuscript will be sent out for blind peer review.

Reviewers for JAAE are selected by the Editor based on expertise in the paper's topic. Authors are invited to submit a list of up to five reviewers whom they believe to be qualified to review the paper. These names may be entered into SAGETrack at time of submission, along with telephone number and email address. Suggested reviewers should not have been involved in any way in the development of the manuscript. Authors may also indicate individuals they would prefer not be selected as reviewers for their paper. Average time from submission to first decision: 25 days.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

  • The manuscript should be submitted in Microsoft Word (use double spacing)
  • Text and references should follow the American Medical Association’s Manual of Style (10th edition)
  • Arrange the manuscript with the following sections and begin each section on a separate page: (1)  abstract, (2) key words, (3) text, (4) references, (5) glossary (if needed), (6) tables and table captions (each table on a separate page), (7) figures captions (figures should be submitted in separate files and not embedded in the manuscript).
  • Authors who have a conflict of interest or have received financial support should disclose this support on the title page of their article or on a separate sheet. If no conflict exists, please state that “no conflict of interest is declared”.
  • All pages should be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page, A page number should be included in the upper right corner of each page.
  • Abbreviated terms are spelled out at first use and followed with the abbreviation in parentheses. Avoid overuse of contrived abbreviations.
  • Written permission to use non-original material including figures, tables and quotations exceeding 100 words, from both author and publisher of the original is included, and the source is credited in the manuscript. No article will be accepted as a submission without all required permissions.
  • Title page: Include (1) the full title of the paper—short, clear, and specific; (2) authors’ full names, (3) degrees and institutional affiliation of all authors; (4) name, address (including zip code), e-mail address, and phone number of all contributing authors; and (5) a running title of 3 or 4 words. Indicate the author to whom communications should go to regarding the manuscript and reprint requests.
  • Abstract: Provide an article summary of 300 words or less.
  • Key words: Include 3-5 key words.
  • Grant and other acknowledgments on the title page: Specify support of any work discussed, by a grant or otherwise, as well as the meeting, if any, at which the paper was presented (including place and date).
  • Exclusive license to publish to Sage Publications is a condition of publication (authors will receive a copyright transfer form electronically once their manuscript is accepted for publication).

TABLES

Tables must be submitted in excel or word table format and not as images. They should appear at the end of the manuscript and not be embedded through the text. Table call outs should appear through the text. Each table should have a table caption and all symbols should be explained in the legend. Tables should not duplicate material text or illustrations. If a table is copied from previous publication, permission from the copyright owner must be submitted and the original source must be referenced in the table legend.

FIGURES

Figures should be submitted as high resolution figure files and not embedded in the manuscript. Figures should not be submitted in Microsoft Word. Figures may be in color or black and white. Credit for any previously published illustration must be given in the corresponding legend and permission from the copyright holder must be obtained by the author and submitted with the manuscript. Each figure should have a figure caption and figure call outs should appear in the text.

Acceptable file formats:

  • TIFF (identified *.TIF) Tag Image File Format
  • EPS (identified *.EPS) Encapsulated Postscript File
  • JPEG (identified *.JPG) Joint Photographic Experts Group
  • PDF (identified *.PDF) Portable Document Format

File Requirements:

  • Line art (black and white) should be scanned at 1200 dpi at 1 bit
  • Color and grayscale images should be scanned at 300 dpi at 8 bit
  • Save each figure as its own file and do not include any extra text (ie, figure captions)
  • Sizing: Save the image to the size of the final printed version with an allowance of not more than 10% larger

REFERENCES
Double-space references throughout, number them in the sequence in which they appear in the text, and identify them in text by superscript Arabic numerals. Accuracy and completeness of references are the author’s responsibility. References follow the American Medical Association’s Manual of Style. If there are more than 6 authors, the first 3 authors are used followed by “et al” including names and initials of all authors. Index Medicus abbreviations are used for journal titles, volume, inclusive page numbers, and year:
