New Labor Forum

eISSN: 15572978 | ISSN: 10957960 | Current volume: 33 | Current issue: 1 Frequency: 3 Times/Year
New Labor Forum is a national labor journal from the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies, The Murphy Institute. Published three times a year, New Labor Forum provides a place for labor and its allies to test and debate new ideas. Issues we explore include (but are not limited to): the global economy’s impact on work and labor; new union organizing and political strategies; labor’s new constituencies and their relationship to organized labor’s traditional institutions; internal union reform and new structural models for the labor movement; alternative economic and social policies; and the role of culture in a new, revitalized labor movement.

Our core constituency consists of leaders and activists in organized labor, as well as academics and political and community activists whose work is linked to the causes championed by, and of interest to, working people and their communities. Our readers’ broad areas of interest cover the entire range of the humanities and social sciences.

  • All new manuscripts to NLF must be submitted using the Sage Track manuscript submission website. Please read below for instructions on submitting manuscripts to NLF.

Log onto the Sage Track manuscript submission website at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/nlf and click on “Create Account: New users click here.”

Follow the instructions and make sure to enter your current and correct email address. Once you have finished creating a user account, your User ID and Password will be sent via email.

    Submission of a New Manuscript

Log onto the manuscript central website and select “Author Center.” Once at the Author Center, select the link “Click here to Submit a New Manuscript.” Follow the instructions on each page. Once finished with a page, click on the “Save and Continue” option at the end of each page. Continue to follow the instructions for loading a new manuscript and/or other files at the appropriate stages (e.g., abstract, title page, etc.). When loading the manuscript file, make sure to use the “Browse” function and locate the correct file on your computer drive. Make sure to “Upload Files” when you are finished selecting the manuscript file you wish to upload. NOTE: All text files must be in word format and de-identified (please also remove any identifying information from the manuscript’s properties before you upload the manuscript). The system will convert the submission to a PDF file.

After uploading your manuscript, review your submission in one of the provided formats (e.g., PDF). Once you have reviewed your submission, click on the “Submit” button. You should receive a submission confirmation screen and an email confirming submission. You can revisit the website at any time to review the status of your submission.

    Submission of a Revised Manuscript

To submit a revised manuscript to NLF, log onto the Sage Track manuscript submission website at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/NLF. Once at your Author Dashboard, view your “Manuscripts with Decisions” and select the option to “Create a Revision.” Continue to follow the directions to upload your revised manuscript. Make sure to upload a de-identified version of your revision as with the initial submission. Also provide comments regarding changes that were made to your revised manuscript. These comments will be provided to reviewers.

Editing Process: We use a multi-tiered editing process. Our editors and peer reviewers will read the articles, and comments are returned to the author. This process may call for a second or third round of revisions. After copyediting, the pages will be typeset and we will email authors the electronic proofs of their article for review. We will then incorporate final changes and perform a final proofread to ensure that the article is ready for publication.

Submission of a manuscript implies commitment to publish in the journal; simultaneous submissions are not acceptable.

What We Ask Of Authors: Articles should start with a clear and pointed argument, making provocative arguments or providing new, concrete information. For book reviews, we ask authors to go beyond summarizing the book to engage with the contents of the book in question. Contributors should avoid jargon, assumptions, technical language, “academese,” and rhetoric. Spell out full titles and put acronyms in parentheses upon their first use, including commonly used union acronyms. All copy should be typed, double-spaced, and should follow the style of the Chicago Manual of Style. Notes and references should appear at the end of the manuscript. Each manuscript should include a brief abstract of 100-150 words describing the subject, general approach, intended purpose of the article, and findings; also include 4-5 keywords for indexing and online searching. Ordinarily, articles should be less than 15 double-spaced pages in length.  Please note that the number of tables and figures mentioned in the text should be submitted along with the manuscript. Tables should be in editable format.

Referees will evaluate submitted manuscripts anonymously. Therefore, potential contributors should send two electronic copies of the manuscript via e-mail, one copy that includes a cover page giving the title, author(s), and author(s) affiliation and complete contact information, and a second electronic copy in which only the title of the paper is included as a means of identification.

Authors who want to refine the use of English in their manuscripts might consider utilizing the services of SPi, a non-affiliated company that offers Professional Editing Services to authors of journal articles in the areas of science, technology, medicine or the social sciences. SPi specializes in editing and correcting English-language manuscripts written by authors with a primary language other than English. Visit http://www.prof-editing.com for more information about SPi’s Professional Editing Services, pricing, and turn-around times, or to obtain a free quote or submit a manuscript for language polishing.

Please be aware that Sage has no affiliation with SPi and makes no endorsement of the company. An author’s use of SPi’s services in no way guarantees that his or her submission will ultimately be accepted. Any arrangement an author enters into will be exclusively between the author and SPi, and any costs incurred are the sole responsibility of the author.
