Conditions of Publication

Submission of a manuscript to the Journal of Family Nursing implies commitment to publish in the journal. Authors submitting manuscripts to the journal should not simultaneously submit them to another journal, nor should manuscripts have been published elsewhere in substantially similar form or with substantially similar content. Authors in doubt about what constitutes prior publication should consult the Editor.

Manuscript Information & Preparation

The Journal of Family Nursing is owned by Sage Publications, Inc., and is published in cooperation with the Faculty of Nursing, University of Calgary. Janice M. Bell, RN, PhD, Associate Professor, Faculty of Nursing and Director, Family Nursing Unit, is the first editor of this journal. The first issue of this quarterly journal began in February 1995.

The Journal of Family Nursing is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes scholarly work on nursing research, practice, education, and policy issues related to families in health and illness. The mission of the journal is to extend understanding about the relationships between families, illness, and health and how practices based on this understanding can serve to diminish suffering in families. In addition, appropriate articles of empirical and theoretical analyses on the subject of family health will be published. Both "family as context" and "family as unit" are represented. Additionally, there is a strong mandate to represent cultural diversity and families across the life cycle. Interdisciplinary and collaborative perspectives are encouraged, as are international contributions.

Articles should be 15-25 typewritten, double-spaced pages. Include the title of the paper, an abstract of no more than 150 words, and 4 to 5 keywords.

Include the following information on a separate cover page (for anonymous review):

The corresponding author's name, credentials, affiliation, address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address.

All other authors’ names, credentials, affiliations, and e-mail addresses.

Footnotes, references, tables, and figures should appear on separate pages.

For style, follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition).

Artwork

All artwork should be camera-ready. Figures should be submitted in TIFF, EPS, JPEG, PDF, or AI file formats, and each figure should be numbered and its placement listed in the text. Electronic line-art-type figures should be of at least 1200 dpi resolution, and electronic photo or grayscale figures should be of at least 300 dpi resolution; all submitted figures should be at least 4.25 inches wide when printed.

Acceptance Criteria

Papers will be selected for their scientific merit and creative treatment of significant issues in the field. One of the objectives of the journal is to establish a forum in which practitioners, educators, and researchers in various clinical specialties and fields can extend the lively debate and begin a more critical dialogue about the family in health and illness.

Copyright & Permission

The author acknowledges that a submitted manuscript is an original contribution not previously published elsewhere in similar form and agrees to sign a transfer of copyright form to ensure Sage Publications may publish and distribute the work. Upon acceptance of a manuscript for publication, transfer of copyright agreements should be signed by each author of the work and faxed to (403) 284-4803.

If material included in the work is borrowed or adapted from other sources (including an author’s own previously published material), then written permission must be obtained from the copyright owner (usually the publisher). The documentation of permission should be included with the manuscript at the time of submission.

For detailed information about permissions please refer to: http://www.sagepub.com/repository/binaries/guidelines/PermissionsGuidelines.pdf.

Associated Costs for Authors

Color figures accepted for publication require an expense by the author of $800 for the first one and $200 for each additional. There is no cost for black-and-white figures.

Any permissions fees that might be required by the copyright owner of material the author is borrowing or adapting are the responsibility of the author(s) requesting use of the borrowed material, not the responsibility of Sage Publications or the Journal of Family Nursing.
