Manuscript Submission Guidelines:

Aims and scope. Critique of Anthropology is an international peer reviewed journal dedicated to the development of anthropology as a discipline that subjects social reality to critical analysis.

Paper submission. All submissions to the journal should be made electronically. Please go to:

http://www.editorialmanager.com/cofa/

Articles are read by members of the editorial group and outside referees, and once provisionally accepted for publication may still be returned to the author for approval and implementation of editorial suggestions and criticisms. On final acceptance, articles are passed to the coordinating editors of the issue in which they will appear, who are responsible for all further correspondence with the author.

The editors will from time to time accept an article for translation into English, once publication has been agreed in principle. But this is a time-consuming process, and contributors are requested to submit in English if at all possible.

The English equivalents to technical foreign words and phrases should always be included. We would prefer authors to avoid using sexist turns of phrase (e.g. the anthropologist and his field data).

Presentation. Articles should be typed double-spaced throughout (including notes and bibliography). Notes should be end notes. There is no absolute limit on length, but 7000 words, including notes and bibliography, is a useful target. Articles should be submitted electronically and must be accompanied by one hard copy and must include an abstract (100-150 words), five to ten key words and three to five lines of biographical information.

Illustrations should be supplied as TIF or EPS files - high resolution.

References cited in the text should use the form: Smith (1990: 26). The following style should be used for assembling the bibliography:

Articles in journals: Feder, Ernest (1980) 'The Odious Competition between Man and Animal over Agricultural Resources in Under-developed Countries', Review III(3): 463-500.

Books: Lunn, Eugene (1985) Marxism and Modernism: An Historical Study of Lukacs, Brecht, Benjamin and Adorno. London: Verso.

Chapters in books: Fodor, Jerry (1989) 'Why Should the Mind be Modular?', in Alexander George (ed.) Reflections on Chomsky, pp. 179-202. Oxford: Blackwell.

Authors will receive electronic offprints of their article and a complimentary journal copy. A maximum of 5 journal copies will be supplied for multi-authored articles. These will be supplied to the main author.

Permissions. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions from copyright holders for reproducing any illustrations, tables, figures, or lengthy quotations previously published elsewhere.

Affiliation. The article title page should include the full name(s) of the author(s), academic or other personal affiliation, and the complete address (plus electronic mail address and telefax number where available) of the author to whom correspondence should be sent.

Peer Review Policy. CoA operates a single-blind reviewing policy in which the reviewers’ names are always concealed from the submitting author. Peer review is a rigorous two-stage process. Manuscripts are initially reviewed by at least three members of the journal’s international editorial working group for intrinsic quality, contribution to debate and suitability for the journal. Some submissions will be rejected or be returned with the recommendation to revise and resubmit at this stage, accompanied by comments. Papers that receive a balance of favourable reviews and are considered a high priority for space in the journal will proceed immediately to external refereeing by specialists in their subject matter. Authors are then sent all the accumulated comments, which may contain suggestions for minor or more substantial revisions. Decisions on manuscripts will be taken as rapidly as possible. Authors should be aware that the volume of submissions is high and that proposals for special issues in particular will be subject to extended scrutiny, since each paper submitted for the issue will be reviewed individually and judged against the standard of papers submitted by individuals that will be competing for space. Questions of priority must arise even when comparing projects of high quality. Although we aim to provide authors with a preliminary response within two months of submission, the two-stage review process and international composition of the editorial group sometimes results in longer turn around times. CoA aims to be a genuinely international journal and one that promotes new ideas. We encourage and regularly publish submissions from younger scholars and from anthropologists outside the United States and Europe.
