Manuscript Submission Guidelines:

NOTES FOR CONTRIBUTORS

1. Articles submitted to the journal should be written in English, be the original work of the named authors, shall not have been published already in whole or in part, nor be currently under consideration elsewhere.

2. HEA is hosted on Manuscript Central™, a web based online submission and peer review system - SAGETRACK. Please read the Manuscript Submission guidelines below, and then simply visit

http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/health to login and submit your article online.

IMPORTANT: Please check whether you already have an account in the system before trying to create a new one. If you have reviewed or authored for the journal in the past year it is possible that you will have had an account created.

All papers must be submitted via the online system. If you would like to discuss your paper prior to submission, please refer to the contact details below.

3. Articles should be as short as is consistent with clear presentation of subject matter. There is a limit on length of 8000 words, including abstract, footnotes and references, except by prior agreement with the editors. The title should indicate exactly, but as briefly as possible, the subject of the article. An abstract of 150-250 words should precede the main text, accompanied by up to five keywords. The full text version should be fronted by a separate page containing the article's title, word count, along with each authors' name, affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, fax number and email address. A biographical note of 50-100 words for each author should be provided, in the journal style, following the front page in the full text version.

4. Articles must be typed in double spacing throughout (especially all notes and references) with generous margins on all sides, but without justification. All pages should be numbered.

5. All unsolicited articles submitted to health: are subject to blind peer review. Authors must take all possible steps to ensure the anonymity of the version prepared for review.

6. Articles should be written in a style that uses non-sexist and non-racist language.

7. Titles and section headings should be clear and brief with a maximum of three orders of heading. American or UK spelling may be used, to the author's preference. Indicate italic type by underlining, and use single quotation marks. Dates should be in the form 9 May 1994. Take out points in USA and other such abbreviations.

8. Ethical Issues

Where appropriate (e.g. reporting research involving patients) authors should indicate how ethical approval was granted. If data gathering has ethical implications, authors must discuss these in the methodology section of the report.

9. Footnotes

Footnotes should be kept to a minimum and presented in numerical order in which they appear in the text in a separate section headed Notes, to appear between the main body of the article and the References.

10. Tables and Figures

Tables and figures should be appended to the manuscript, with a cross-reference in the text in the form 'Table x should appear about here'. Tables and figures should have short, descriptive titles. All footnotes to tables and their source(s) should be typed below the tables. Column headings should clearly define the data presented. On acceptance of the article, camera-ready artwork for all figures must be supplied. Artwork intended for same-size use should be a maximum size of 188:113 mm (page depth: page width). Electronic sources are preferred. Please send in one of the following formats: EPS (all fonts embedded) or TIFF 800 dpi b/w only.

11. References.

When referring to a source whose name is in the text, use only the author's name, with year of publication in brackets, e.g. Young (1989) argues . . . . If the author's name is not in the text, include both the author's name and year of publication separated by a comma within brackets, e.g. (Young, 1989). Pagination follows year, e.g. (Young, 1989: 140). With dual publication, give both names, e.g. (Murphy and Fischer, 1983); for three, four or five authors, cite all authors the first time the reference appears in the text, and in subsequent citations, include only the surname of the first author followed by et al., e.g. (Ruberman et al., 1984); when a work has six or more authors, cite only the surname of the first author followed by et al. If there is more than one reference to the same author and year, distinguish between them by use of the letters a, b etc. after the year of publication, e.g. (Parsons, 1951a). A series of references should be enclosed within a single pair of brackets, separated by semicolons, e.g. (Cohen, 1988; Cohen and Wills, 1985; Payne and Jones, 1987).

All references cited in the text should be listed alphabetically and presented in full at the end of the article using the following style:

Articles that do not conform to the fundamentals of this style will be returned to the authors for revision.

12. Quotations

Lengthy quotations (of more than 40 words) should be displayed, indented, without the use of quotation marks. References to sources should be given at the end of the quotation, with the author's name and year of publication in brackets. Shorter quotes should be retained within the body of the text, within single quotation marks. Double quotation marks should only be used for a quotation within a quotation.
