Notes for Contributors
Manuscripts should be submitted in duplicate. They should be typed on one side of A4 paper and typed double-spaced throughout (not only the text, but also displayed quotations, notes, references and any other matter). The format should be unjustified, with ample margins on all four sides. All articles must be accompanied by an abstract of 150-200 words. Manuscripts should be sent to The Editor, Studies in History, Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Mehrauli Road, New Delhi 110 067. All contributions must be accompanied by the contributor's complete postal address (and e-mail address, if possible).
Notes should be consecutively numbered and presented at the end of the paper, at the foot of each page (even though they will eventually be printed as footnotes). A note must contain more than a mere reference.
Use 'z' in '-ize' and '-ization' words, but use British rather than American spellings.
Use single quotation marks, reserving double quotation marks for quoted words within a quotation. Spellings of words in quotation should not be changed. Quotations of 45 words or more should be separated from the text and indented with one space with a line space above and below.
Diacritical marks should be used in writing on pre-modern history, and should be consistent. Italicized word can have diacritics as required. In articles on the modern period diacritical marks should be used sparingly.
Present each figure and table on a separate sheet of paper, gathering them together at the end of the article. Distinguish between figures (diagrams) and tables (statistical material) and number them in separate sequences, e.g., 'Figure 8', and 'Table 8'. Each figure or table should be cited in the text by number, e.g., 'as Table 1 shows' and not by location, e.g., 'as shown in the table below'. Tables should cite sources at the bottom.
Avoid excessive italicization for emphasis, but use them for book titles and foreign words, unless particular terms occur so frequently that they are better in roman type. Proper name in a foreign language should always be in roman, as also common terms such as 'status quo', 'a priori' and 'et al.'
Use 'nineteenth century', '1980s'. Spell out numbers from one to ninety-nine, 100 and above to remain in figures. However, for exact measurements use only figures (3 km, 9 per cent not %).
References must be in the anthropological style in the text, e.g., (Sarkar 1907: 145). Page numbers in the text are necessary only if the cited portion is direct quote. Citations should be first alphabetical and then chronological, e.g., '(Rao 1999; Sandeep 1995, 1997; Shand 1999)'. The detailed style of references is as follows:
