INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
The Health Education Journal (HEJ) is now indexed by ISI!
Submission of papers: Papers should be emailed to the Editor, Professor Anthony Blinkhorn (editorblinkhorn.HEJ@usyd.edu.au).
Length of contributions: Papers should ideally be no longer than 3,000 words, although we will publish longer papers following discussions with the Editor. Authors should keep tables and illustrations to a minimum.
Abstract: Research papers should have a structured abstract with the following headings: Objective, Design, Setting, Method, Results, Conclusion. Clearly such a format may not be appropriate for discussion papers, therefore the author/s should give a summary of no more than 250 words.
Key words: Up to five key words should be included.
References: References should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper. They should give the full names and initials of all authors, unless there are more than six, when only the first three should be used followed by et al. Names should be followed by the titles of the article; the title of the journal; the year of publication; the volume number: and the first and large page numbers (see 1 below). Journal titles should be given in full, or abbreviated according to the style of Index Medicus. Titles of books should be followed by the place of publication; the publisher; and the year (see 2 below).
1 Aitken PP, Eadie DR. Reinforcing effects of cigarette advertising on under-age smoking. British Journal of Addiction, 1990; 85: 399-412.
2 Reynolds M. Gynaecological Nursing. Oxford: Blackwell Science Publications, 1984.
Acknowledgements of submissions: All submissions are acknowledged immediately. Responses to further correspondence are made as appropriate.
Peer review: All papers submitted to the Health Education Journal undergo a peer review process. On the basis of the referees' response, papers will either be rejected, accepted subject to revision, or accepted unconditionally.
Acceptance of submissions: On acceptance, the Editor retains the right to make stylistic changes, decide on the date of publication and shorten material if necessary.
House style: Papers will be edited to confirm with house style with regard to spelling and presentation. Titles and acronyms should be given in full on first usage. Unnecessary capitalisation should be avoided. Where percentages are referred to in the text, the words 'per cent' should be used rather than the '%'.
Proofs: Authors are sent one copy of the proofs. Corrections should be confined to typographical errors or matters of accuracy. Extensive amendments are not acceptable. Authors should return proofs as soon as possible, preferably within two days of receipt, and not later than the date given in the covering letter.
Offprints: The corresponding author will be given controlled access to a PDF of their article and a complimentary copy (per author) of the issue after publication.
Dual publication: If a submitted paper has been published elsewhere, or is being considered for another publication, the author(s) must inform the Editor.
Accuracy and liability: A contribution is accepted on the strict understanding that its author is responsible for the accuracy of all information contained in the contribution and that references to named people and/or organisations are both accurate and without libellous implications.
