The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is an independent, non-profit organization promoting sustainable patterns of world development through collaborative research, policy studies, networking and knowledge dissemination. Founded in 1971, today the Institute has a multicultural, multilingual staff of over 70 people from 18 countries and work programmes in partnership with dozens of institutions in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean. Its headquarters is in London, with other offices in Edinburgh and Dakar and with an affiliate organization, IIED-América Latina in Buenos Aires. During the 1970s, IIED defined and developed the concept of sustainable development and since then, it has been seeking to promote its implementation globally and within nations. For further details, see www.iied.org
The Human Settlements Group that is responsible for Environment and Urbanization within IIED was founded in 1976 by the Argentine urbanist, Jorge E. Hardoy and its work has always been based on partnerships with research institutes and NGOs in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Most of its work is on three topics: urban poverty reduction (including the role of micro-finance); urban environmental burdens (improving local environmental health conditions, while avoiding long term threats to regional and global life support systems); and rural-urban linkages and urban change (ensuring that urban and rural development strategies are mutually supportive). Environment and Urbanization is a sister journal to Medio Ambiente y Urbanizacion published by IIED-America Latina in Buenos Aires since 1983, which focuses on Latin America - see http:/www.ingentaconnect.comntent/iieal/meda
