Introduction to the Student Study Site
The Student Study Site has been created for students and instructors using the Fifth Edition of Propaganda & Persuasion by Garth S. Jowett and Victoria O'Donnell. This study site contains additional case studies to illustrate propaganda in society.
The following materials are available on this site:
Case Studies
The two case studies on this site provide examples of how propaganda has been and continues to be used in society. The first case study analyzes the propaganda efforts during the two U.S. invasions of Iraq. The second case study deconstructs an attempt by a pharmaceutical company to maintain a monopoly in its production of estrogen sold under the brand name Premarin while fending off charges of animal cruelty. Applying the 10-step analysis suggested in the text, each case study examines the propagandists, the audience, the various techniques employed, and counterpropaganda. These case studies demonstrate that propaganda can be used in a variety of ways in modern society.
