SAGE has been part of the global academic community for 45 years, supporting quality research that transforms society and our understanding of individuals, groups, and cultures. SAGE is the independent, innovative, natural home for scholars and educators who share our commitment and passion for the social and behavioral sciences. Throughout 2010, SAGE will be implementing a broad program of activities that celebrate our contributions to social science over the past 45 years and that also advocate the broader impact and relevance of social science research around the world. We are proud to be partnering with a number of leading organizations in the social sciences to host events and discussions. Watch out for further information about events and activities across the year. Next Generation of SAGE Journals Online—in progress The upgrade of the SAGE Journals Online platform is currently in progress. All 560+ SAGE journals will be migrated individually onto the next generation platform, supported by HighWire Press’ “2.0” technology (H2O). New features and functionality will include the following: (Click on the image at right for more detailed information and screen shots)
To ensure that the migration causes minimal disruption to access, this upgrade has been scheduled to coincide with academic summer recess, with the bulk of journal sites planned to migrate from mid-June 2010. All sites will be migrated individually to minimize disruption to customers and end users, with each site expected to experience minor disruption. SAGE and HighWire anticipate no downtime of the platform during the migration. Access control for institutions and individuals will not be affected by the migration. Administrative features and access to usage reports will also remain the same. A major goal of our platform upgrade is to improve the user experience and keep readers in context as they conduct research. The new interface is based upon a flexible three-column design that makes features available without taking attention away from the substantive article content. Features most closely associated with the manuscript pages are placed closest to it. Several individual sites have already been migrated in 2009 and early 2010, including:

SAGE Research Methods Online—the essential tool for researchers from the world's leading research methods publisher Provide your patrons access to more than 100,000 pages of book, journal and reference content, supported by a newly devised taxonomy. SAGE Research Methods Online's one-of-a-kind taxonomy links together over 100,000 pages of content from books and journals. A simple search will return information as basic as dictionary and encyclopedia entries and as complex as specific case studies to aid users’ understanding of research methods and their applications. The Methods Map creates a visual search “map” linking different methods and authors. It shows relationships between methods and guides users to related content to assist with searches. Exploring is made user-friendly with the underlying bread crumb trail, allowing for easy return to a previous place in the search. The SRMO Lists feature functions like a playlist, allowing for grouping of research-relevant materials from all SRMO content; articles, chapters, and multimedia content. Lists can then be made public and searchable among members, enhancing the SRMO learning experience by drawing on researchers’ insight. SAGE Research Methods Online also contains an About the Author section for more information about major contributors. There are videos with some of the authors, along with other relevant content, in our multimedia files. Sign up now to test the beta version, live in the fall of 2010. How do I learn more about it?
SAGE’s Deep Backfile digitization is nearly complete SAGE has digitized 97% of the overall expected volume of backfile issues included in the SAGE Deep Backfile Package. Access to the SAGE Deep Backfile Package is provided on SAGE Journals Online. SAGE will continue to locate and digitize the remaining issues. Reminder—Free Access to SAGE Launch Journals in 2010 You’ve come to know SAGE as a leading publisher of peer-reviewed, must-have content in the fields of business, humanities, social sciences, and science, technology, and medicine. We are continuing our tradition of providing high-quality research to libraries by launching titles in new and emerging fields. In 2010, we are launching 13 journals (learn more about each title) and are offering libraries free online access via an IP-registered trial. This offer includes perpetual access to volume 1 at your library. Please note that consortia libraries participating in SAGE Premier will receive access to 2010 launch journals (volume 1 through 3) free of charge and do not need to register for this offer. Register your library for access by filling out this form. SAGE highly commended in the JISC TechDis Publisher Lookup Awards SAGE has been awarded joint second place in the first-ever JISC TechDis Publisher Lookup Awards, recognizing publishers who have excelled in changing and adapting their business processes to meet their customers’ accessibility needs. SAGE has always striven to provide content in accessible formats to visually impaired (VIP) customers. We have implemented procedures whereby any requests from disability libraries or VIPs are handled as a priority before any other piece of business and turnaround time for requests is, at most, 24 hours. Getting hold of content in an accessible format is key to the success of students with visual impairments and print disabilities. Therefore, we make every effort to have every one of our titles available in PDF format. We currently have 2,000 titles available (around 66% of our total in-print publishing list) and we scan requested titles from our backlist that are not currently available, for no additional charge. SAGE works closely with a multitude of disability librarians around the UK and the rest of the world and are particularly pleased to have been recognised by the Lookup Awards. We shall be endeavouring to make even more of our titles available in the coming months and to make sure we uphold our high standards of service to our customers.
