Change to Institutional Usage Reporting on SAGE Journals Online

We are pleased inform you that there will be a change to the institutional usage reporting on SAGE Journals Online.  The change aims to improve the usability of the reports for you and your institution by removing the duplicate lines of usage for the same journal that you may have seen in your COUNTER reports to date.

Duplicate lines of usage arose on an account when Journal A was subscribed to individually, and Journal A was also subscribed to (on the same account number) as part of the SAGE Premier package or the SAGE Full-Text Collection packages.

A new de-duping code (implemented by HighWire Press on October 15) will ensure that usage to a journal is counted and reported just once regardless of the number of SAGE packages that grant access to it on the same account number.

Please note that you may still see a journal’s usage reported on different accounts attached to your administrator email address.

We hope you find this change an improvement in the usability of SAGE usage reports.

SAGE Journals Online is hosted by HighWire Press who are rolling out this change across all publishers on their portal. Should you have any questions or concerns about this change and your reports please visit http://highwire.stanford.edu/cgi/feedback.

SAGE REFERENCE

SAGE eReferenceSAGE eReference Receives Rave Reviews!

“This product is wholeheartedly recommended for public, academic, school, and special libraries supporting research in the social sciences from high school level onward.”
Cheryl LaGuardia, Library Journal

“…the Reference Staff at Sawyer Library eagerly seeks out useful online reference collections we can make available to our users. We've just purchased a very valuable one called Sage eReference…We hope you'll find this new electronic reference shelf as useful as we do!”
Kathi Maio, Mildred F. Sawyer Library, Suffolk University

“Will librarians and users hold the electronic version in the same high regard as the print collection? Yes, most definitely, given the content’s quality and the smooth interface.  This user-friendly database presented none of the glitches that can accompany the initial use of a new product…This excellent reference resource includes a brief tutorial.”
L. Lord, University of Kansas, CHOICE

“To meet the needs of students, who consistently say ‘Where am I?’ while searching, SAGE has designed its interface with several visual cues, including a unique top banner for each reference-book title.  This banner, a montage of the book cover design, is present on every page and changes according to the title being viewed.  It is visually pleasing, stylish, and useful for reminding users where they are.”
Sue Polanka, Booklist

“Another distinctive aspect of SAGE eReference is the Reader’s Guide, a feature found in all SAGE print encyclopedias and a dynamic navigation tool online.”
Sue Polanka, Booklist

SAGE Sponsors Science Café: Elections: "How Voters Really Think and Feel"

As the US gears up for the next presidential election, we all speculate on who will win—and why. Does it matter if the candidate is male or female, minority or majority, attractive or not?  SAGE, in conjunction with the Foundation for the Advancement of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (FABBS), sponsored a thought-provoking Science Café on October 24, 2007 at Washington DC’s National Press Club to discuss those issues.

The Café presented two dynamic and entertaining speakers. Eugene Borgida, PhD, of the University of Minnesota, discussed variables identified by political psychologists, such as gender, race, and experience that influence who we decide to vote for. Alexander Todorov, PhD, of Princeton, focused on the appearance of the candidates and how people form personality impressions from facial appearance. Applying this research to elections, he showed how judgments of competence—based on facial appearance—predict the outcomes of elections. Afterwards, a substantial question-and-answer period brought the audience into the discussion.

FABBS’ Science Cafés present the public with unique opportunities to learn about psychological science in an interactive and social environment. Cafés feature lectures given in Washington DC area museums by leading researchers from around the country.  Visit www.fabbs.org for more information.

STM SPOTLIGHT

Request a Trial to SAGE’s Science, Technology, and Medicine Packages

SAGE’s STM portfolio continues to expand, and we currently publish over 150 journals in science, technology, and medicine, many of which are ranked in the Thomson Scientific 2006 Journal Citation Reports®.  We are now offering our STM titles in three separate packages in the fields of clinical medicine, health sciences, and science, technology and medicine, with backfile to 1999.

Science, Technology, and Medicine – 150 journals including the following:

Health Sciences – 115 journals including the following:

Clinical Medicine – 57 journals including the following:

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works
A new online database from SAGE and Alexander Street Press

How will hospital staff use this product?

This product will be a helpful and practical tool for staff psychologists, psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses, as well as residents in training at medical schools and university training hospitals.  The database includes the following:

  • 2,000+ previously unpublished transcripts of therapy sessions edited to preserve anonymity. Users will find transcripts of treatment sessions dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, childhood trauma, sexual abuse, eating disorders, and many other conditions.
  • 40,000+ pages of first person accounts, which allow users to understand, appreciate, and feel empathy for the patients they are treating.
  • 25,000+ pages of SAGE handbooks and reference works that complement and provide context to the first person accounts

Contact librarysales@sagepub.com
to request a trial today!

What are the benefits to hospital staff?
The unique content in the database can be used as a training tool in hospitals. The transcripts offer an opportunity to increase the accuracy and speed of psychiatric evaluations, by allowing the appropriate hospital staff to be able to research subjects they are dealing with and apply the related experiences to their cases.  Furthermore, by reading transcripts of actual therapy sessions, hospital staff will gain a better understanding of the conditions of the patients they are treating. It is difficult for someone in training to treat a patient who has been suffering from a condition for several years: This database offers an opportunity for insight into the suffering of patients.

In addition to the transcripts and primary accounts, the product contains 36 SAGE handbooks and encyclopedias covering topics, including addictions, child maltreatment, cognitive behavior therapy, counseling psychology, stress, and coping.  These books offer encyclopedia entries, case studies, and how-to materials.

All three types of material in the database can be browsed in a variety of ways, including by author, practitioner, the symptoms discussed, diagnosis of disorders, or therapeutic approach used in the treatment.

Visit www.alexanderstreet.com/products/psyc.htm for more information.

In September 2007, SAGE announced the launch of a new journal series dedicated to the latest therapies for major world wide diseases.

The series, encompassing the highest quality peer-reviewed scholarly content, focuses on groundbreaking studies of diseases and emerging pharmacology and medicine. The first journal in the series, Therapeutic Advances in Cardiovascular Disease, was launched on September 2 at the European Society of Cardiology Annual Congress in Vienna, Austria. The first issue is available online at http://tac.sagepub.com. The second journal, Therapeutic Advances in Respiratory Disease followed on September 15 at the European Respiratory Society Annual Congress in Stockholm, Sweden. The first issue is also now available online at http://tar.sagepub.com.

“We’re very excited by the launch of the Therapeutic Advances journals,” commented Ziyad Marar, SAGE Deputy Managing Director and Publishing Director. “Our investment in the series reflects SAGE’s continued commitment to our STM publishing program, complementing our established reputation as the market leader in the social sciences.”

Published bimonthly starting with Volume 2 in February 2008, the journals are aimed at clinicians and researchers in the fields of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and will be a forum for all views in these disciplines.

SAGE Sponsors the 2007 SAGE Lecturer of the Year at the Science Engineering and Technology Student of the Year Awards

SAGE is delighted to have sponsored for the first time this year the 2007 SAGE Lecturer of the Year at the Science Engineering and Technology Student of the Year Awards.  (SET Awards)  Speaking at an “Oscar-like” awards ceremony in September at London’s Alexandra Palace, Ziyad Marar, SAGE's Deputy Managing Director and Publisher congratulated lecturers as the unrecognized heroes in the science and engineering community.

“Better funding and greater support for lecturers and teaching staff are crucial in the battle to engage and attract young people into science and engineering careers,” he said.  This claim is made at a time when a shortage of science graduates risks threatening the future of British industry.  The SET Student of the Year Awards are designed to raise the profile of science and technology education in Britain.  They are judged by professional SET bodies and sponsored by global industrial and pharmaceutical companies.

“We’re particularly pleased to be the first academic and professional publisher to sponsor the SAGE Lecturer of the Year Award and delighted that Dr. Andrew Owen from the Pharmacology Department at the University of Liverpool has won the Award.  It recognizes his key role in personally inspiring and nurturing the talent and drive of the young students at Liverpool today.”  For further information, go to www.sagepub.co.uk/awards.
