For the fourth year in a row, SAGE has partnered with ALA’s Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) to provide travel grants to six outstanding library support staff. The $1,000 grants provide vital financial support to individuals who otherwise might not be able to attend the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, California, in June. The 2008 ALCTS/SAGE Support Staff Grant helps cover airfare, hotel, and American Library Association conference registration expenses for the following library support staff:
The grants are presented to full-time library paraprofessionals, with at least three years of experience in technical services and collections who have never attended an ALA annual conference. The six award recipients were selected for their outstanding commitment to the profession, active participation in local and paraprofessional associations, and clear desire to serve their library communities. |

SAGE recently made a $2.5 million donation to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital to support the rebuilding of the hospital, including its new medical library. Additionally, because it is a teaching hospital and the only Level II Trauma Center between Los Angeles and San Francisco, SAGE has also made its entire collection of science, medical, and technology journals available to the staff at no charge. The SAGE Medical Library is scheduled to open in approximately 5 years and will be a key addition to the Cottage Health System, which was formed in 1996 as the not-for-profit parent organization of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (including Cottage Children’s Hospital), Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, and Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital. The Cottage Health System provides maternal and pediatric services, with a designated “baby-friendly” birth center; comprehensive cardiac, neurosurgical, and oncology programs; emergency services; the only Level II Trauma Center in the region; outpatient services including diagnostic radiology, outpatient surgery, and an eye center; as well as psychiatric and chemical dependency services. “The Cottage Health System’s more than 500 physicians include specialists in all major clinical areas, many of whom participate in the education of some of the top medical residents in the country in internal medicine, general surgery, and radiology,” commented Sara Miller McCune, Founder and Chairman. “We’re pleased to participate—with both the new medical library and the donation of our cutting-edge science, medical, and technology resources—to encourage the continued scholarship of these fine professionals.” |

“This product is wholeheartedly recommended for public, academic, school, and special libraries supporting research in the social sciences from high school level onward.” “Will librarians and users hold the electronic version in the same high regard as the print collection? Yes, most definitely, given the content’s quality and the smooth interface. This user-friendly database presented none of the glitches that can accompany the initial use of a new product…This excellent reference resource includes a brief tutorial.” “To meet the needs of students, who consistently say “Where am I?” while searching, SAGE has designed its interface with several visual cues, including a unique top banner for each reference-book title. This banner, a montage of the book cover design, is present on every page and changes according to the title being viewed. It is visually pleasing, stylish, and useful for reminding users where they are.” “…the Reference Staff at Sawyer Library eagerly seeks out useful online reference collections we can make available to our users. We've just purchased a very valuable one called SAGE eReference…We hope you'll find this new electronic reference shelf as useful as we do!” —Kathi Maio, Mildred F.
