CQ Press Joins the Global SAGE Family

We are excited to announce that on May 30, 2008, SAGE acquired CQ Press, the book-publishing unit of Washington-based Congressional Quarterly Inc. (CQ). CQ Press serves the library, college, and professional markets with a diverse array of print and online products. It publishes about 100 new titles each year, with a growing and authoritative list of textbooks and reference titles focusing on political science, mass communication, and related disciplines.

While CQ Press is now a division of SAGE, it will continue to operate independently. SAGE plans to keep CQ Press intact as a separate division based in Washington, DC, bearing the CQ Press imprint, and retaining all CQ Press employees under the senior management team that will remain in place.

“We’re very pleased CQ Press is joining the global SAGE family,” said Blaise Simqu, CEO and President of SAGE. “CQ Press and SAGE enjoy a shared mission and values. Both are driven by a passion for scholarship and innovation that impacts education and public policy.”

Human Genomics and Proteomics: First SAGE-Hindawi Open Access Title Now Live

SAGE and Hindawi are pleased to announce the launch of Human Genomics and Proteomics (HGP), the first title from the two companies’ joint venture: SAGE-Hindawi Access to Research.

Human Genomics and Proteomics is a peer-reviewed international open access journal, affiliated with FINDbase: the National/Ethnic Mutation Database, documenting frequencies of causative mutations leading to inherited disorders in various populations worldwide. The journal will provide a unique forum for the discussion of research on human genomics and proteomics, systems biology, and various aspects of personalized medicine.

“As the first journal with an affiliated database in this discipline, HGP offers a unique opportunity to authors to open up access to their research to the widest possible community,” commented Dr. George Patrinos, newly appointed joint Editor-in-Chief, along with Dr. Emanuel Petricoin. “We’re delighted to be working with SAGE and Hindawi on this new title.”

The journal will publish high-quality original and review articles comprising research on human genomics and proteomics. Additionally, datasets submitted for inclusion in FINDbase, will also be peer-reviewed and, if accepted, authors will be asked to write a short abstract for inclusion in the journal in a dedicated section FINDbase datasets. These data will be published against a PubMed ID upon acceptance of the journal by PubMed/Medline. The journal will be available online only, from the SAGE-Hindawi platform. HGP is an Open Access journal. Publishing an article in HGP requires an Article Processing Charge of £700 or approximately $1400.

SAGE recently presented the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) a gift of $500,000 to establish an endowed chair for the dean of social sciences in the College of Letters and Science. The gift was given in honor of SAGE’s founder and publisher, and the position will be known as the SAGE Sara Miller McCune Dean of Social Sciences.

Endowed chairs are highly prized academic positions enabling a university to attract and retain top scholars and to more fully develop a field of study by providing ongoing financial support for enhanced research and instruction. The gift from SAGE will specifically support the teaching, research, and administrative activities of Melvin Oliver, a distinguished UCSB professor of sociology and dean of the social sciences.

“It is with great pride that I am the inaugural chair holder for this most important gift to UC Santa Barbara and particularly to the Division of Social Sciences,” commented Dean Melvin Oliver. “SAGE has played an extraordinary role in the dissemination of social science research around the world and this gift will form a permanent legacy to honor SAGE founder Sara and her late husband’s vision. We will continue to support a social science that is innovative and speaks to the major challenges facing humanity.” Oliver is a renowned scholar, educator, author, and former vice president of the Ford Foundation.

SAGE Launches ICAN: Infant, Child, & Adolescent Nutrition

Obesity and corresponding diseases such as diabetes are more and more common. Weight and eating disorders have become especially problematic among young people, creating a need for more information about how to deal with pediatric nutrition questions. To answer this need, SAGE is launching its newest journal, ICAN: Infant, Child, & Adolescent Nutrition, a multidisciplinary journal for clinicians in pediatric nutrition.

Debuting in January 2009 and supported by an editorial board of dietitians, nurses and nurse practitioners, physicians, speech and language therapists, and specialists in primary and acute pediatric nutritional care, ICAN will be a bimonthly peer-reviewed resource for healthcare professionals involved in nutritional care of children from birth through adolescence. It will offer the latest information concerning impaired eating, eating disorders, breastfeeding education, and chronic and acute care nutritional support through research reports and reviews, clinical perspectives, case studies, and more.

To find out more about ICAN: Infant, Child, & Adolescent Nutrition, visit the journal’s website at http://ican.sagepub.com. Subscriptions are free of charge to qualified individuals; $30 for non-qualified individuals; $150 for institutions. Bimonthly. First issue: Jan. 2009. ISSN: 1941-4064 eISSN: 1941-4072.
