SAGE Congratulates 2009 Nobel Prize Winners in Economic Sciences

We would like to extend our congratulations to Elinor Ostrom and Oliver E. Williamson, the 2009 Nobel Prize winners in Economic Sciences. Both Elinor and Oliver were early advisors to SAGE, as editor, as editorial board member, and in providing support with our growing urban and regional studies programs in the 1970’s.

Elinor Ostrom, Indiana University, was founding editor of the Journal of Theoretical Politics, now in its 21st volume. She also served the International Editorial Advisory Board of the Urban Affairs Annual Reviews for a number of years.

Founder and Chair of SAGE, Sara Miller McCune, extended her warm gratitude to both Ostrom and Williamson for their influence and support. “Lin and her husband [Vincent Ostrom, Emeritus at Indiana] often gave us sound advice during the 1970s,” she said. “Professor Williamson was also generous to us as an advisor with his broad knowledge of regional studies and was amongst the early influences on our decision to publish in the related field of community economic development.”

SAGE has long been recognized as the world’s leading publisher in the social sciences, and it is due to the involvement and support of great thinkers like Ostrom and Williamson that has helped the company achieve this in just 45 years of publishing.

We’d like to celebrate with Elinor and Oliver by freeing up access to content published by them on the SAGE Journals Online platform. You can access these papers below for free until the end of 2009.

Research methods have always been at the core of SAGE’s publishing program. Sara Miller McCune founded SAGE in 1965, and soon after, she published SAGE’s first methods book, Public Policy Evaluation. A few years later, she launched the Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences series—affectionately known as the “little green books.”

Today, more than 45 years and two million little green books later, SAGE continues to push the boundaries with a growing list of more than 1,200 research methods books, journals, and reference works across the social, behavioral, and health sciences.

Guide to U.S. Elections, Sixth Edition
Infused with new data, analysis, and an examination of issues relating to elections from 2006 to 2008, Guide to U.S. Elections is as up-to-date as it is comprehensive. The sixth edition covers the historic national elections of 2008, in which Barack Obama became the first African American president of the United States, the Democrats’ gain of control in both houses of Congress, analysis on the impact of ongoing campaign finance reform efforts, and more.
America's Struggle with Empire America’s Struggle with Empire
This groundbreaking volume explores how Americans have dealt with the complex issue of governing foreign people in different regions over time, bringing unparalleled focus to the history of U.S. territorial expansion and superpower foreign policy. Drawing from a wide range of primary sources, America’s Struggle with Empire addresses the inevitable questions that arise when trying to reconcile deeply-held beliefs on the perceived evils of empire with political reality.
World at Risk, 2e World at Risk, Second Edition
Much has changed since the publication of the first edition of this sourcebook, as the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a global economic crisis have altered the way in which global issues are perceived today. To address this expanding complexity, World at Risk has been fully restructured and updated. Newly added chapters discuss immigration, international finance, transnational governance, human trafficking, and drug trafficking.
The New York Times and Critical US Elections The New York Times and Critical U.S. Elections
Certain elections have the power to shape the governing regimes and political behavior in a unique way, leaving a distinct footprint in the political landscape. Elections scholar Gerald Pomper has carefully assembled a selection of articles, editorials, and other news pieces on presidential and congressional elections published in The New York Times. By pairing this primary source material with easy-to-read narrative, he provides valuable context and constructs a fascinating documentary history of critical elections in the United States.
The New York Times and Emerging Democracies in Eastern Europe The New York Times on Emerging Democracies in Eastern Europe
The third volume in the TimesReference from CQ Press imprint, The New York Times on Emerging Democracies in Eastern Europe chronicles the peaceful transitions from Soviet rule and communist order that have occurred in the 1980s and 1990s in Poland, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, the Baltic States, Serbia, Georgia, and Ukraine. Through the lens of The New York Times, the ideas, strategies, symbols, and tactics that shaped the revolutions in Eastern Europe emerge in what journalists like to call the “first draft” of history.
The Supreme Court and Capital Punishment The Supreme Court and Capital Punishment
This new resource explores the highly controversial topic of capital punishment by discussing the high court’s past and current involvement in all aspects of the death penalty. Legal historian Michael E. Parrish examines how the Court’s rulings throughout the county’s history have shaped the guidelines under which Americans have been tried, convicted, sentenced, and put to death for capital offenses. Through primary source documents and expert analysis, he chronicles the major cases that have come to define U.S. capital punishment jurisprudence.
The Supreme Court and Elections The Supreme Court and Elections
A thought-provoking new installment in the CQ Press series “The Supreme Court's Power in American Politics”, this book draws attention to the complex nature of voting and election law. The act of voting sounds simple enough for those who live in a popular democracy such as the United States. But the process of voting in America is, in fact, a highly contested act—from the question of who can vote to the tricky problem of accurately organizing, running, and tabulating the results of a popular election. With the help of primary documents, legal historian Charles L. Zelden explores the ways in which the High Court has struggled with these issues throughout American history.
