A Look Back at 2006. . . |
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
We are pleased to provide you with the first Librarians’ Newsletter of the new year. Looking back, 2006 was quite a busy and exciting year for SAGE. We are committed to actively responding to the needs of our customers and this led to many new and important initiatives in 2006. We strengthened our offerings for libraries and consortia by:
In addition, our partnerships with several key consortia, the incorporation of our SAGE India office, and the addition of our Asia-Pacific office in Singapore (with sales operations across the region) were significant milestones in increasing our global sales presence and dissemination of our quality content around the world. We recognized the need to work more closely with our library customers and, to that end, established a dedicated library sales team. Beverly Geer, Library/Consortia Sales Manager for the central U.S. territory, is part of this team and is profiled in this edition of the Newsletter. As SAGE continues to grow in size and reach, we look forward to our ongoing communications and collaboration with the library community, so together we can explore new ways and technologies to improve access to research. We hope you enjoy this winter 2007 edition of the SAGE Librarians’ Newsletter and, as always, look forward to any feedback you may have. SAGE Congratulates Its ALA Midwinter Meeting Winner We hope you enjoyed the 2007 American Library Association Midwinter meeting in Seattle, and we thank you for visiting us at the SAGE booth. We also thank all who entered our drawing to win five online journal subscriptions and an encyclopedia or handbook for your institution. We are pleased to announce the winning institution is Southern Illinois University! Congratulations to Meseret Gebremichael, Business Reference Librarian, for winning on behalf of his institution.
SAGE Supports the Library Community SAGE is committed to supporting the librarian community in various ways. In 2006, SAGE became an official ALA Library Champion. Library Champions are among the American Library Association (ALA)'s greatest corporate supporters, with over 90% of their dues going to support library advocacy. SAGE's publishing philosophy is that engaged scholarship lies at the heart of any healthy society, and we are honored to further this vision as a Library Champion. SAGE also sponsors several library events, conferences, and divisions of library associations. Some of these have included:
In addition, we provide six annual travel grants through the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of ALA, making it possible for library support staff to attend the ALA Annual Conference each summer. The grants, up to $1,000 each, help cover related expenses, including airfare, three nights of hotel lodging, and conference registration for each recipient. SAGE Enhances Asian Presence In January 2007, SAGE showed its commitment to the strategic importance of Asia as a major component of its global academic and professional publishing business by inaugurating its India office into the global group and opening its new Singapore office, making it the Asia-Pacific headquarters. We are pleased to introduce Beverley Geer, who joined SAGE as Library/Consortia Sales Manager for the Central Territory in May 2006. Her responsibilities include selling products such as SAGE Premier, SAGE Full-Text Collections, eReference, and Backfile to libraries and consortia, working closely with librarians, and keeping them informed of new and improved offerings and services. Based in San Antonio, Texas, Beverley brings a wealth of library and serials experience to SAGE. Prior to joining SAGE, she spent three years as Collection Development Manager (South) for YBP Library Services where she was responsible for sales activity for products/services including approval plans, continuation services, monographs, technical service workflow solutions and electronic services. Prior to YBP, Beverley was the Marketing and Sales Representative for BioOne, an aggregator of bioscience research journals, as well as Project Manager for both Questia Media and Endeavor Information Systems. She also possesses 25 years of extensive experience working within the academic library profession. Positions Beverley has held include Associate University Librarian for Technical Services at the University of Texas-El Paso, Head Cataloger at Trinity University, and Head of the Copy Cataloging Section at The Ohio State University. Beverley is a member of the American Library Association, ALA's Association for Library Collections and Technical Services division (where she served as chair of the Serials Section in 2000), and the North American Serials Interest Group, where she served as president in 1997-1998. She is the author of numerous publications and has delivered many presentations and workshops of interest to the research library community. She earned both her B.A. (English) and Master's in Library Science at the University of Oklahoma. Lastly, she has served as Associate Editor of Serials Review since 1997. Any success I have in sales can be attributed to my background in library technical services where our goal was to provide service and materials to our customers—the university faculty, staff, and students," says Beverley. "I believe that we in sales are consultants, advisors, and partners to librarians. As Alison Roth aptly put it in a previous edition of the Newsletter, my library visits concentrate on determining what a library needs in the way of content and services. "I am very impressed with SAGE’s enthusiasm for and commitment to providing excellent content and good service to libraries. Working with Mark Kendall, the rest of the Sales Team, Marketing, and our library colleagues, I hope we can devise even better and more innovative ways to market, package, and sell content."
