Understand the nature of strategic rivalries in: Handbook of International Rivalries, 1494–2010

Latest addition to CQ Press Correlates of War series

Washington DC (November 1, 2011)–The Soviet-American Cold War is over, but other countries in the world, such as North and South Korea, and Indonesia and Pakistan, are still feuding. Is world conflict increasing or decreasing? Handbook of International Rivalries, 1494–2010, new from CQ Press, answers that question, and explains how rivalry processes – the genesis of conflict – work.

Handbook of International Rivalries examines the roughly 200 strategic rivalries—two states that view each other as threatening competitors to the point that they categorize their antagonists as enemies—that have been responsible for nearly 80 percent of the warfare of the past two hundred years. This timely reference work not only explores rivalry resolutions but also unresolved, ongoing conflicts into the 21st century. Divided into six global regions, readers will find a research-friendly template approach for each rivalry covered, that includes:

  • location and origin
  • duration
  • rivalry type
  • level of conflict
  • status of resolution
  • rivalry symmetry

Including a comprehensive bibliography and a chronological listing of rivalries by countries, region, and duration, Handbook of International Rivalries, 1494–2010 is a valuable resource for students and researchers of global issues, international relations, and diplomatic and military history. It belongs on the shelves of all public and academic libraries.

William R. Thompson is the Rogers Professor of Political Science at Indiana University and is currently the president of the International Studies Association. He is the author of more than 25 books, including The Great Power and Global Struggle, 1490–1990 (with Karen Rasler).

David R. Dreyer is an assistant professor of political science at Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory, NC. His research focuses on international security, issue conflict, rivalry, and democracy.
