Explore alternatives to traditional incarceration in: SAGE Reference's Encyclopedia of Community Corrections

Los Angeles (April 6, 2012) If rehabilitation and low recidivism rates are the goal, it's clear that traditional incarceration in standard prison settings does not work. One alternative—community-based corrections—was conceived as a way to be more progressive, humane, and effective, particularly with the less serious criminal offenders for whom incarceration with serious offenders might prove more damaging than rehabilitative. Although these programs have now been in place for 40 years, to date no comprehensive reference resource has tackled this topic.

As a way to provide coverage on all aspects of this challenging subject, SAGE Reference has just published the authoritative Encyclopedia of Community Corrections, in both print and electronic formats. Accessible and jargon-free, the one-volume reference explores all aspects of community corrections, from its philosophical foundation to its current inception. The 150 A-to-Z entries, written by a respected group of internationally recognized scholars, are helpfully organized in a Reader's Guide within the following key topics:

  • Classification and Risk Assessment
  • Diversion and Probation
  • History, Development, and Definitions
  • Intermediate Sanctions
  • Parole
  • Theory and Treatment in the Community

With the current legal, political, and economic challenges, it is more imperative than ever that correctional systems find methods that are more effective than just incarceration. Because the Encyclopedia of Community Corrections will help students, scholars, and corrections professionals understand the evolution, options, and effectiveness of community-based corrections as a viable alternative for certain offenders, it belongs on the reference shelves of all academic and public libraries. A FREE 30-day online trial to this title is available at www.sagepub.com/freetrial.

Editor Shannon M. Barton-Bellessa is an associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at Indiana State University.
