Explore women's U.S. political involvement in: Women in American Politics: History and Milestones

Washington DC (February 2, 2012) - In 1872, Susan B. Anthony became the first American woman to vote in a presidential election. In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro was America's first woman to be nominated for vice-president by a major political party. As time goes by, women are playing an ever larger part in American politics. Detailing those milestones and trends is Women in American Politics: History and Milestones, new from CQ Press.

This comprehensive two-volume reference provides perspective on the events that have surrounded women's political activities in America. Providing analysis on women's political achievements in the U.S., including the nation-wide suffrage campaign; pioneer women state officeholders; women first elected to Congress, governorships, and other offices; and women first appointed as Cabinet officials, judges, and ambassadors; it also includes profiles of the women who have run for president and vice president, as well as interest groups and political actions committees.

The unique Women in American Politics is a guide to understanding the complex struggle in women's progress toward achieving political parity with men in the United States, and helping readers to get the entire picture are these three sections in each chapter:

  • Graphic information - tables, lists, and charts-detailing the historical record on women officeholders, with data not compiled anywhere else
  • Insightful narrative analyses - describing how women achieved what they did, and exploring the trends behind their political milestones, and how society and economics affected their progress
  • Biographical profiles - of women who have been key in the struggle for political equality

Sidebars illuminate the drama of political life and the evolving female electorate, exploring such issues as how women voters have influenced issues and elections and the tradition of appointing widows to open seats. Because Women in American Politics provides a guide to understanding the complex struggle in women's progress toward achieving political parity with men in the United States, all academic, public, and school libraries as well as the media, current and aspiring political leaders, and students of women's history will want this book on their shelves.
