Explore the marriage of two huge areas of study in: SAGE Reference's Encyclopedia of Gender in Media

Los Angeles, CA(March 9, 2012) The first newspaper was published in the 1600s and the first magazine in the 1700s. Radio and television have been broadcasting for a century. However, it wasn't until the last fifty years or so that women began to play more of a role in the production of media – especially with the emergence of all the new media technologies available. Currently, more people not only use some kind of media every day, they also produce media, in the form of social media posts, texts, images and videos. The ubiquitous media influences our everyday notions of gender roles and our concepts of gender identity.

Critically examining the complex role of the media in enabling, facilitating, or challenging the social construction of gender in our society, SAGE Reference's new Encyclopedia of Gender in Media explores the social construction of masculinity as well as femininity in a variety of entertainment and news content in print and electronic media. The 150 signed, A-to-Z entries, written by a variety of respected scholars in the field, are helpfully organized in a Reader's Guide within the following key topics:

  • Biographies
  • Concepts and Theories
  • Discrimination and Media Effects
  • Internet and New Media
  • Media Industry
  • Media Modes
  • Media Portrayals and Representations
  • Policy and Advocacy

The Encyclopedia of Gender in Media is the first comprehensive reference work that has tackled this topic. In addition to the entries, researchers will also be able to peruse the chronology, cross references and further readings, resource guide and more, making this resource one that belongs on the reference shelves of all academic and public libraries that serve researchers, consumers, users, and creators of media content. A FREE 30-day online trial to this title is available at www.sagepub.com/freetrial.

Editor Mary Kosut is an associate professor and the coordinator of the Media, Society and the Arts program at Purchase College, State University of New York.
