Los Angeles, CA (Oct 11, 2012) – SAGE, one of the world’s leading independent academic and professional publisher, announced the purchase of primary sources publisher Adam Matthew at the Frankfurt Book Fair today.
Best known for digitizing the Mass-Observation Archives at the University of Sussex, the ‘American West’ project with The Newberry Library, Chicago, and a wide range of resources from The National Archives, Kew, Adam Matthew is an award winning publisher of online primary source collections for the humanities and social sciences. Sourced from leading libraries and archives around the world, their unique research and teaching collections cover a wide range of subject areas from medieval family life to 20th century history, literature and culture.
“Adam Matthew has established a strong reputation for high quality online products thanks to their creativity and editorial integrity,” said Karen Phillips, Editorial Director at SAGE. Ziyad Marar, Global Publishing Director added: “We have found tremendous similarities in our company values, approach to publication and our passion for high quality content: this is a venture that fits strongly with SAGE’s strategic direction and we are excited to welcome Adam Matthew to the SAGE group.”
Adam Matthew will continue to operate under its existing management from its offices in Marlborough, Wiltshire, and Chicago, Ill. SAGE sales representatives will work closely with the Adam Matthew team to bring the portfolio to an even wider international audience, building on the experience gained working as the Adam Matthew agent in the Middle East since January 2012.
Stephen Barr, President, SAGE International said: “We have seen the strong reputation Adam Matthew has built with the library community. As a major independent academic publisher, SAGE is ideally placed to help Adam Matthew grow its international reach without compromising on its company values; we are confident this is a move that will be welcomed by our library partners.” Katharine Jackson, Deputy MD added: "Through this and other major acquisitions, SAGE has maintained a clear focus on finding the right strategic partners to support our long term publishing goals."
“We have found SAGE an excellent partner to work with: our product fit and our strongly aligned brand values make this an exciting opportunity for the next phase in Adam Matthew’s development,” said Khal Rudin, Sales & Marketing Director, Adam Matthew.
Adam Matthew Chairman and Publisher Bill Pidduck commented: “With the strong backing of the SAGE group we will continue to operate as a standalone subsidiary to build upon our highly valued relationships with source archives and customers worldwide.” Managing Director and Publisher David Tyler added: “We look forward to strengthening our list of digital collections and enhancing our service to universities, colleges and research centres.”
