Can your library help you publish open access?

When publishing your work open access, your institution may be able to help you to cover the open access article processing charge (APC). Your institution may have an open access prepaid account (OAPA) with SAGE in order to cover APCs or you may be eligible for a discount due to your institutional affiliation. Read below to find out more.

Austria (KEMÖ)

SAGE has an agreement with 14 Austrian research institutions (members of the Austrian Academic Library Consortium) from 2019 to 2021. Due to this, articles by corresponding authors affiliated with the participating institutions can be made open access for the highly discounted rate of 200 GBP within approximately 900 subscription journals which are part of the SAGE Premier Collection.

SAGE will contact the corresponding author of the eligible article to ask them to fill in the SAGE Choice licence agreement and advise them of any additional steps they need to take.

Canada (CRKN)

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) is a partnership of Canadian Universities dedicated to expanding digital content for the academic research enterprise in Canada.

Eligibility

Universities - Please see the CRKN website for a list of qualifying institutions.
Authors - The corresponding author must be affiliated with a member institution for the article to qualify.
Journals – All SAGE Choice and gold open access journals.

The discount

Authors who are affiliated with CRKN member universities are eligible for a 40% discount off all article processing charges (APCs) for both gold open access journals and SAGE Choice.

How to redeem

Authors must contact SAGE and request the discount. Your affiliation will then be verified and your discount arranged.

For SAGE Choice, email openaccess@sagepub.com 

Please note that the discount is only applicable for requests made before the article is published.

Finland (FinELib)

Eligibility

Universities – Please see a list of member institutions here.

Authors - The corresponding author must be affiliated with a member institution for the article to qualify.

Journals - SAGE Choice journals only.

The discount

Qualifying authors are eligible for a reduced rate of 200 GBP. 

How to redeem

Authors must contact SAGE and request the discount. Your affiliation will then be verified and your discount arranged. 

Please note that the discount is only applicable for requests made before the article is published.

Germany (DFG)

SAGE has an agreement with 117 German academic institutions (participants of the German Sage Journals Consortium, organised by Bayerische Staatsbibliothek) for 2019. Articles by corresponding authors affiliated with the participating institutions can be made open access for a highly discounted rate within subscription journals which offer SAGE Choice, SAGE’s hybrid open access option, and are part of their institution subscription package. Corresponding authors publishing an article in a gold open access journal may be entitled to a 20% discount on the prevailing article processing charge (APC) for that journal.

Netherlands (VSNU)

SAGE has an agreement with VSNU Netherlands institutions, which is running between 2017 and 2019. The details of the deal are as follows:

Subscription journals which offer SAGE Choice: The articles of corresponding authors from various VSNU Netherlands institutions can be made open access through SAGE Choice, SAGE's hybrid open access option, free of charge.

Gold open access journals: Corresponding authors publishing an article in a gold open access journal may be entitled to a 20% discount on the prevailing article processing charge (APC) for that journal.

United Kingdom (JISC/SHEDL/WHEEL)

Jisc is a membership organisation providing digital solutions for UK education and research.

Authors who are affiliated with institutions which are members of Jisc are eligible for a discounted rate on the article processing charge (APC) for open access publication through SAGE Choice.

Universities - Many UK universities are members of Jisc. You can enter your university’s name in this page or contact your librarian to check. 

Authors - The corresponding author must be affiliated with a member institution for the article to qualify.

Journals – SAGE Choice journals only.

The discount

Qualifying authors are eligible for a reduced rate of 200 GBP. 

How to redeem

To redeem this discount authors will need to obtain their discount code from their institution’s library and enter it in the discounts field of the SAGE Choice licence agreement which will be provided to them once they request SAGE Choice.

Please note that the discount is only applicable for requests made before the article is published.

Open Access Prepaid Accounts (OAPAs)

Institutions with an open access prepaid account (OAPA) have a fund with SAGE which can be used to cover open access processing charges (APCs) in both gold open access and hybrid journals.

Below is a list of all institutions that currently have an OAPA with SAGE. To use your institution’s OAPA funds, contact your institution’s librarian and obtain your OAPA code. If you are publishing open access through SAGE Choice, you will enter the code in the licence agreement form. If you are publishing in a gold open access journal, you will enter the code into the payment system at the point of payment.
