Organization & Environment aims to publish rigorous and impactful research on the management of organizations and its implications for the sustainability and flourishing of the social, natural and economic environment in which they act. To this end, it searches for contributions to the academic, managerial and policy debates related to the sustainable development of organizations, grounded on sound social (e.g. economics, political science, sociology, psychology, history, law, and all business domains), natural and/or life science research.
In addition to the exploration of novel concepts and the advancement of theory, the experimentation of new methodologies and designs, and the empirical validation of theoretical insights, O&E encourages the study of new phenomena, not completely explainable with extant knowledge, and the consequent launch of novel theoretical and empirical lines of inquiry. Finally, it welcomes the registration of experimental designs, in labs but especially on the field, committing to publish the results of well-executed registered studies, regardless of the scientific outcome.

To this end, it searches for insightful contributions to the academic, managerial and policy debates related to the sustainable development of organizations, grounded on sound business scholarship (management, marketing, accounting, operations, finance, etc.) as well as high quality social, environmental or life science research speaking to the phenomena of interest at any level of analysis, from neurons to planetary systems.
In addition to the standard theory development and theory testing endeavors, O&E welcomes studies focused on new phenomena, not completely explainable with extant knowledge, and the consequent launch of novel theoretical and empirical lines of inquiry. Critical to the assessment of these “data first” type of contributions is their capacity to expose the failure of existing theories to explain the empirical evidence and the potential capacity of the proposed inquiry to do so.
O&E is open to all research methodologies, as long as they are applied in line with the highest quality standards. It also welcomes the registration, and in specific cases the publication, of experimental designs, especially complex field experiments. The journal commits to publish the results of well executed, registered, studies, regardless of the scientific outcome (i.e. irrespectively of the support of hypothesized effects).

Organization & Environment (O&E), recognized as a leading international journal unique in its emphasis on the connection between management of organizations and environment, publishes quarterly peer-reviewed research that sets new and relevant standards for rigorous thinking about the complex and relevant dimensions of the sustainability – including an appropriate balance between and among social, natural, and economic challenges. This research provides a crucial resource for the development of more effective environment-related organizational policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation.
This O&E mission is achieved through a variety of regular features, including the following:
** Academic Research Articles and Essays (empirical, theoretical, or conceptual): research that develops, tests, or extends environment-related management or sustainability theory and contributes to organizational practice. All empirical methods -including, but not limited to, qualitative, quantitative, field, laboratory, meta-analytic, and combination methods- are welcome. To be published in O&E, a manuscript must make strong conceptual, empirical, or theoretical contributions and must highlight the significance of those contributions to the management field. O&E is not tied to any particular discipline, level of analysis, or national context. O&E encourages relevant research rooted in multiple scientific disciplines.
** Research Reviews: the purpose of a research review is to succinctly review recent progress on a particular organization and environment topic, summarizing the current state of knowledge of the topic. It creates an understanding of the topic for the reader by discussing the findings presented in recent research papers.
** Resource Reviews: reviews that examine and assess organization and environment books, websites, databases, software, video programs, simulations, and other scholarly resources for the purpose of making recommendations on how these can help advance organization and environment scholarship.
2. REVIEW PROCESS
A) Desk decisions. When a manuscript is first received, the editor completes a preliminary screening of a manuscript to assess the degree to which it (1) fits the criteria described in O&E's Mission and (2) possesses at least a minimal likelihood of being favorably evaluated by O&E's reviewers. Submissions that fail to satisfy one or both of those criteria may be returned to the authors as a desk decision, sometimes in the form of a desk reject and sometimes in the form of a desk edit.
O&E is committed to providing quick reviews to submitters, which means that desk rejection will be used as one way to speed the process for all submissions by guaranteeing that every paper accepted for review possesses the potential to be published in the journal. In this context, a desk rejection does not necessarily mean a poor quality submission, but rather that it has a low likelihood of being published in O&E. O&E strives to provide constructive and developmental feedback to authors within approximately two months of initial submission.
B) Review process. For each manuscript that passes the initial editor (desk) review stage, the editor assigns an action editor (either him- or herself or an associate editor or guest editor) and two reviewers (including members of the O&E’s editorial board or other qualified reviewers). The manuscript's action editor makes publication decisions about the manuscript in conjunction with the recommendations provided by the reviewers. All submissions will be double-blind reviewed, so, manuscripts need to have been prepared in a way that guarantees double-blind review. Submission of a manuscript to the Journal also carries the implicit quid pro quo of submitters being willing to review future O&E manuscripts, if called upon to do so.
3. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter including the nature of your contribution and the connection between your contribution and the journal aims, an abstract of no more than 150 words, and a biographical paragraph of 75 words or less for each author. Contributors may also include an appendix in the cover letter with three suggested reviewers, whom they believe are especially well-qualified to review their submission with a brief justification for their recommendations.
The list of suggested reviewers is optional. It is inappropriate to list as preferred reviewers researchers from the same institution as any of the authors, collaborators, and co-authors from the past five years, as well as anyone whose relationship with one of the authors may present a conflict of interest. In any case, Organization & Environment may or may not use the suggested reviewers, and at least one review will be always conducted by a reviewer that was not suggested.
The format and style of written works for publication should normally follow the guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. O&E's editors will use clarity, conciseness, and overall quality of writing as criteria in determining the appropriateness of manuscripts submitted for publication. Manuscripts should be written as simply and concisely as possible without sacrificing meaningfulness or clarity of exposition. Typically, papers should be no longer than 40 double-spaced pages (using one-inch margins and Times New Roman 12-point font), inclusive of references, tables, figures and appendices.
In addition to following APA style, manuscripts should generally conform to the following guidelines:
Everything (title, abstract, text, references, endnotes, block quotations, etc.) should be double-spaced. All in-text citations should be included in the reference list; all references should have in-text citations. Endnotes should be used instead of footnotes. Written signed permission for any copyrighted material incorporated into the manuscript should be obtained where necessary and should accompany the final manuscript.
Organization & Environment conducts blinded peer-review. It is VERY IMPORTANT to keep in mind that when uploading your manuscript you will need to upload a manuscript file with no identifying author information (designate as Main Document) and a separate title page (designate as Title Page) with author details.
Be aware that submitted manuscripts should not be under review for publication elsewhere, and should not be submitted to another publication entity during the O&E review period. Authors whose manuscripts utilize data that are reported in any other manuscript, published or not, are required to inform the editor of these reports at the time of submission. Submission of manuscripts previously published in conferences’ proceedings is acceptable; similarly, prior presentation at a conference or concurrent consideration for presentation at a conference does not disqualify a manuscript from submission to O&E.
