SAGE Publishing expands data offering with the purchase of Data-Planet

January 17, 2018

SAGE Publishing has today announced the purchase of Data-Planet, a statistical multidisciplinary data repository that has application in academic libraries, public libraries, government and commercial markets.

Speaking of the purchase Karen Phillips, Senior Vice President Global Learning Resources, SAGE commented:

“Data-Planet marks another exciting leap forward for SAGE in our data offerings to the library and research community. It transforms our data publishing, both increasing the scale of data that we offer; the range of data including global data; and the versatility of analysis that Data-Planet offers the researcher. We are delighted to welcome Data-Planet to SAGE, the product has a great fit with our existing data products, and  enables us to deliver the leading social science statistical solutions for both students and researchers.”

Data-Planet Statistical Datasets is the largest collection of organized statistical data and is used by many of the world’s leading research universities. Covering 16 major subject categories (including education, health and vital statistics, international relations and trade), it brings to SAGE 35 billion data points from over 450 databases sourced from 70 public and private organisations. Data-Planet provides immediate access to data presented in charts, maps, graphs and table form, via multiple points of entry further enabling and facilitating comparison within and to all other datasets within the Data-Planet repository.

Richard Landry, CEO and Founder of Conquest Systems, Inc. further remarked on the purchase:

“Our primary focus with Data-Planet was to make a product that enables global access to and engagement with a vast range of statistical data. Data-Planet has already demonstrated its impact and value within library, trade and commercial markets. We approached SAGE as an expert within the field of data statistics and a publisher who would be able to better support the growth of the product where we couldn’t. We see clear synergies between our goals and ambitions for Data-Planet and the spheres in which SAGE will be able to take it.”

Data-Planet complements SAGE’s current statistical product offering, which includes:

  • SAGE Stats: interactive, statistical platform that provides vetted, hard-to-find data to students and academics to use when conducting social science research.
  • US Political Stats: a data download and visualization tool that aids researchers in finding and understanding data on the three branches of the U.S. Government (Legislative, Executive, and Judicial).

Data-Planet is the flagship product of Conquest Systems, Inc. on completion of the purchase, Richard Landry, CEO and founder, alongside several other staff members will be joining SAGE to support the development and transition of the product.
