Student Workbook for Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers

Second Edition

July 2014 | 168 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Do you understand the difference between a square and a rhombus well enough to explain it to a child?

Could you weigh out 12 grams of sand if you were given weights of 3 grams, 7 grams and 16 grams?

Can you spot common errors in subtraction calculations and identify the likely misconceptions behind them?

This Student Workbook reinforces and applies concepts introduced in Derek Haylock’s Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers. With over 700 tested questions endorsed by primary PGCE trainees, along with detailed solutions and explanatory notes, the Student Workbook helps you gain the confidence you need to understand, apply and teach the primary maths curriculum.

  1. Checking Understanding questions are designed to help you check your own knowledge of terminology, understanding of key concepts and principles, and your mastery of important skills.
  2. Reasoning and Problem-solving questions encourage you to use and apply mathematical concepts in solving mathematical puzzles or problems in real life situations.
  3. Learning and Teaching solutions include responses to children’s errors and misunderstandings, development of teaching ideas, evaluation of teaching approaches, and consideration of objectives to promote understanding.

This book is part of the Haylock package that we have adopted as essential reading for our undergraduate programme. It really is a useful companion guide to the essential knowledge contained in Mathematics Explained. I love that it encourages student teachers to apply their knowledge and consider teaching and learning issues for it too. Very timely text.

A really helpful book, particularly for those students whose subject knowledge in maths is not as secure as it might be. The students really like being able to 'test' their own understanding of the mathematical topics and to identify the areas where they need to spend more time.

This text proves to be more popular amoungst less confident students.

The tasks are uncomplicated and wide ranging, and provide students with a set of suitable questions with which to audit their own subject knowledge.

Suggested for those trainees on our primary course who need to build their confidence with mathematics.

This workbook is not only supportive of primary teachers in my opinion it is also beneficial to student teachers who deliver non mathematical subjects to older students.
With the current drive to embed mathematics into lessons this work book could easily become inclusive within any PGCE course where subject specialists perhaps do not have the confidence or knowledge required to confidently embed mathematics as often as is required.
As I work through the work book and take advantage of the solutions to check myself and the explanations at the back I can identify where this workbook will fit in with my own teaching practice to embed numeracy in my non mathematical lessons.
