Nearly 18 million Americans voted for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic Primary elections. Sixteen of the current U.S. senators are women. Some glass ceilings are being broken, but at the same time, there were only 12 female CEOs of Fortune 500 companies in 2007. After three waves of feminism of the course of more than a century, where do women stand in today's world?

The Multimedia Encyclopedia of Women in Today's World looks at women today and delves into contexts of being female in the 21st century. Thus, the scope of the encyclopedia focuses on women's status starting approximately in the year 2000 and looks forward. From A-to-Z, this work covers the spectrum of defining women in the contemporary world. In keeping with the focus on the contemporary context, this is not a static work; rather, after initial publication (in both print and electronic versions), significant annual updates will be available for purchase that add new content and fresh, new multimedia to this electronic version.

Key features
  • An initial "base product" equivalent to four volumes with 1,000 entries organized A-to-Z is available in both print and electronic formats to maximize accessibility for today's students both on campus and off.
  • In this electronic version, entries are augmented by unique multimedia pedagogy (video clips, audio/video transcripts, colorful photographs, etc.) that enliven the content.  This multimedia content is being selected by Jane Sloan, Media Librarian and Head of Multimedia Services for Rutgers University Libraries.
  • This initial base product will be followed by significant annual updates to add new content, fresh multimedia, and updates for selected entries from the original four volumes.
  • Signed entries (with cross-references and recommended readings) cover the full range of issues in contemporary women's studies, with volumes including information relevant to the following academic disciplinary contexts:  arts and media; business and economics; criminal justice; education; family studies; health; media; military; politics; science and technology; sports; religion; and women in different cultures and countries.
  • An A-to-Z organization, a "Reader's Guide" that organizes entries by broad themes, a detailed index, cross-references between entries, and robust search-and-browse features make it easy for users to locate the information they need.
  • Additional features include a Chronology of Women's Milestones, a Resource Guide to selected print and electronic resources, a Glossary, and an Appendix of primary documents.
