Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will analyze issues of diversity, race, ethnicity, and multiculturalism in criminal justice to identify and apply strategies to overcome issues in their communities.
  • Students will compare and contrast criminal justice standards relating to the codes of professional conduct in order to apply ethical principles to value-driven community service.
  • Students will identify and recognize the importance of nonverbal communication, and the drafting of professional communication documents and presentations, in the criminal justice disciplines.
  • Students will define and articulate clear understanding in the application of public safety, juvenile justice, criminal courts and correction systems through the use of technology.
  • Students will examine different criminal justice and security problems by analyzing information using critical- and creative-thinking skills to find solutions to improve criminal justice organizations.
  • Students will apply the theoretical concepts and techniques of communication in their professional and personal environments.

Course: Introduction to Criminology

An introduction to the study of crime and criminal behavior. The concept of crime, the process of law formation, and the academic domain of criminology. Theories of crime causation, methodologies used by criminologists, and the complex relationship between crime, the media, and modern politics.

 

Course: Policing

This course focuses on the role of police in a comparative and historical context. Issues to be covered include the maintenance of law and order before police, the development and structure of police forces, the role of secret police forces, and the debates on issues such as police-community relations and counter-terrorism.
