April 2007 | 232 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
In Teaching and Learning Communication, Language, and Literacy, Ann Browne draws on research findings and good practice to provide practical and guidance about working with young children aged 3–5 years in nursery and reception classes. The author covers all of the key theoretical issues, providing a wealth of classroom examples. Practical suggestions for activities and resources include ways of working with environmental print and found texts, ICT, TV, video, and books.

This practical resource examines:
  • How young children develop as learners and users of language and literacy
  • The contribution that home and school make to their learning
  • Play as a context and a resource for learning
  • The role of adults in supporting and extending learning

'In her usual accessible fashion, Ann Browne has written a book that provides support and guidance for both students and practitioners in a range of settings….The whole text manages to combine exploration of theory interwoven with references to documentation followed by practical examples of activities that might foster particular skills, knowledge or understanding' - Early Years

`This text offers sound and detailed guidance on all aspects of communication, language and literacy in the early years...[The author's] helpful message about nurturing positive attitudes to young children's learning permeates the entire text...This could become one of those books that we all need to own and refer to regularly' - Marian Whitehead, language and early years consultant

The is a very accessible book for undergraduate students. It is similar in many ways to Ann Browne's other book "Developing Language and Literacy 3-8" but it has some useful additional chapters. The chapter on assessment is particularly interesting.
