The Pocket Guide to Therapy
A 'How to'of the Core Models

December 2011 | 272 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Trainees in all mental health professions need basic knowledge of the key therapeutic approaches in counseling & psychotherapy. This is the essential companion, placing specific emphasis on practical application to guide the reader in the 'how to' of conducting each therapeutic model.

Approaches covered include established models such as CBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, systemic therapy and solution-focused brief therapy, and more recent additions to mainstream therapy like mindfulness and narrative therapy. Each chapter is written by an up-and-coming name in the field, offering a unique insight into the challenges and possibilities of training in each model. The book:

  • Includes case examples from a wide range of mental health care settings
  • Embedded with worksheets, sample questions and diagrams
  • Highlights challenges, strengths and weaknesses of each approach
  • Details the background and practical application of therapeutic models
  • Discusses evidence-based practice and outcomes

Written in language familiar to first-year trainees and using a range of features to enhance learning, this pocket guide is ideal for those embarking on training across counseling, psychotherapy, psychology, health, nursing, and social work.

'A brave, well wrought and extremely valuable précis of 10 of the major talking therapies, this book promises to be the trainee's key how-to text in a field that can often be bewildering. The authors are to be congratulated!' -
Colin Feltham, Emeritus Professor of Critical Counselling Studies, Sheffield Hallam University

'A little gem of a book, that somehow seems to be bigger on the inside than the outside by doing what it says on the tin...Without question I recommend this book for trainee and experienced therapists' -
Michael Townend PhD, University of Derby

A useful text which is useful to dip in and out of as required for reference purposes. The text has a practical focus and explores various therapeutic methods. Great for students looking for an overview.

Too brief to cover much detail, of course, this book is helpful partly in that it puts different modalities alongside one another. Given the divisions between therapists of one flavour or another, this is a useful step, although one is always left wishing a greater range of modalities could have been covered (inevitably).
