Research Councils UK (RCUK)

The RCUK Open Access policy applies to journal articles that acknowledge Research Council funding. The RCUK OA policy requires posting funded articles: (1) with no restrictions on non‐commercial re‐use, and (2) within a defined period.  Sage supports authors depositing their articles in a database that satisfies the RCUK policy, with the understanding that the article may be used in any non-commercial manner by users without restriction. In compliance with the RCUK Open Access policy, authors may deposit their Original Submission or Accepted Manuscript at any time and in any format.

Non-commercial use of the article may include printing, downloading, copying, and text and data-mining the content of the article.  Users should only save downloaded copies of the article, or excerpts thereof, to the user’s personal files and shall not post or share the materials with any other parties.

Wellcome Trust and other Charity Open Access Fund (COAF) Partners Open Access Policy

Sage is fully compliant with the Open Access policy of the Charity Open Access Fund (COAF), a partnership of the following six health research charities:

  • Arthritis Research UK
  • Bloodwise
  • British Heart Foundation
  • Cancer Research UK
  • Parkinson’s UK
  • Wellcome Trust

For any article funded by a COAF partner, Sage will comply with the COAF requirements of: (1) publishing the article under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence, Version 4 (effective 1st April 2017), and (2) automatically depositing the article in PubMed Central (PMC) on behalf of the author with no embargo.

To facilitate the above steps, it is essential that the corresponding author informs Sage of the COAF partner funding of their article by selecting the relevant FundRef ID for the funding agency when submitting their article.

Sage regularly audits the funding status of the Open Access articles we have published to ensure agreed-upon processes have taken place, and we will make any needed adjustments in a timely manner.

Information regarding complying with your funder’s deposit requirements is available at Funding bodies, policies and compliance webpage.  Please contact us at openaccess@sagepub.com if you do not see your funder addressed on our website or if you have any questions regarding funder compliance requirements.
