This book gives a good and highly readable overview of a range of social work interventions. Following a case study related to one family the book uses an accessible format in order to explain the relevance of the varied methods under discussion at different parts of the social work process. The chapters written by the editor himself are perhaps its strongest with the overview of pyschosocial approaches and the argument for eclectic models well thought out.

I find this book presents a clear overview of main approaches used to intervene.A few points I suggest are:Typing error on Contents page i.e. Chapter 2 Pearson - centred needs to be Person - centred.I find the introduction in Chapter 6 on Cognitive behavioural approaches rather confusing. I find it helpful to explain that behaviour modification came historically first; give an account of this and then explain behavioural approaches have subsequently been combined with cognitive approaches to become CBT.Chapter 4 on Advocacy is very welcome in providing a concise overview; something I find missing in many social work texts.I suggest it would be helpful in talking about intervention to include the Collingwood model, sometimes referred to as the Three stage model. Stage 1 involves creating a profile of the case, followed by Stage 2 which analyses the situation in relation to theories to inform and theories to intervene. Stage 3 considers skills and values. The framework of theories to inform and theories to intervene is always one that I find supports student social workers on placement analyse and reflect their cases. Many students have told me that this then becomes central to their own thinking in approaching all cases.
