Decolonising a Business School in Context: From Theory to Practice” shares a flexible framework designed to help educators undo colonialism in their curriculum

Sage, a leading independent academic publisher, has released "Decolonising a Business School in Context: From Theory to Practice," a case report offering a transformative approach to decolonising business school curricula. The report aims to create a more inclusive and fairer academic environment.

Highlights include:

  • Practical Framework for Decolonisation: A guide for educators to decolonise their curriculum, focusing on long-term cultural change through conversations, discomfort, context, creativity, and co-creation.
  • Inclusive Collaboration: The project involved a diverse group of participants, including students, academic staff, and professional services staff, to ensure an inclusive approach.
  • Addressing Structural Issues: The authors highlight the importance of challenging and changing existing systems and structures instead of integrating diverse groups into them. Their aim is to confront and acknowledge colonial legacies in business education.
  • Creative Engagement Methods: The project used creative methods like cultural animation and collaborations with artistic organisations tailored to the local and national context of the business school.

“As an independent publisher, Sage is committed to publishing papers that address societal problems and drive social change,” said Kiren Shoman, executive vice president, editorial and global executive lead, DEI at Sage. “Decolonisation challenges colonial systems, structures and relationships and it has the potential to significantly change power dynamics. This report is a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable academic environment.”

Author Caroline Chapain said, "Decolonisation is a collective endeavour that needs to be anchored in context. By sharing how we have approached putting decolonisation into practice in our School, we hope to provide some practical and adaptable principles and insights that can help other business schools pursuing this work in their own contexts."

Co-author Emma Surman added, "Decolonising education is not just about adding diverse perspectives but fundamentally rethinking and restructuring the way we teach and learn."
