Information for societies & partners

Editorial support

Sage is committed to supporting scholarly communication, which means collaborating with researchers, libraries, scholarly societies, and the wider scholarly community. 2025 Independence with Impact Report highlights these achievements. Our series of white papers look at many topics, including metrics measuring research impact, big data, the use of video in higher education, libraries in the developing world, and open access. Our latest expression of these values is called Sage Policy Profiles. Sharing our findings with the research community through this channel is another way Sage supports the wider scholarly community.

Editors

To help support our partners with ensuring high ethical standards in their publications, our team can help you improve turnaround times and ensure adherence to best practice. The team can advise on optimizing efficiencies, performance of the editorial team, workflow improvements, and managing backlogs. Should any of your editorial teams have specific queries, we will provide support and advice. We have guidance on the inclusion of ethical approval and informed consent statements and other useful information via our Information for Editors section, and in the case where your editorial team might have concerns over specific papers, we have experienced in-house legal and Research Integrity staff on hand to help. Our Information for Editors area features a variety of supporting materials, such as guidance for editors on publishing quality content, increasing citations and improving your impact factor, and taking action on diversity. They also feature a Journal Editorial Board Members (EBMs) Hub, designed to help researchers navigate their role as a current or future editorial board member.

A recent survey of our journals editors to assess Sage’s performance showed that 91% of editors rated their relationship with their Sage Editor as “good” or “excellent”.

We rely on solid reporting to back up the decisions we make because we believe in evidence-based approaches to strategy and marketing to ensure we apply the best approach for your journal’s development.

Sage's editorial support for societies

  • Editorial independence: We whole-heartedly support the editorial independence of every journal we publish.
  • Online manuscript submission and peer review system: By partnering with Sage you will have access to our own branded version of the ScholarOne Manuscripts system called Sage Track. It is a widely used system and extremely popular with editors, authors, and reviewers.

The key benefits: Our societies find that adopting Sage Track means less administration for the editorial office, automatic reminders for reviewers and easy to use reporting. Sage is unique in that we have an in-house team to support our journals and we configure the site to fit your workflow and provide you with ongoing support.

  • Impact factor and citation metrics: Drawing on considerable experience and access to citation metrics, your Publishing Editor at Sage will provide Editors with data that will inform their journal development strategies to increase the journal's Impact Factor and Sage will manage the administration of Abstracting and Indexing evaluations such as SCOPUS, the ESCI, MEDLINE, etc.
  • Reporting: Our reports include usage data, citation analysis, competitor analysis, and author feedback, which can be used to inform and update your editorial strategy.
  • Increasing online usage: Our Sage Journals platform provides first-class online journal delivery. Our state-of-the-art platform hosts many of the world’s most highly cited journals.
  • Global sales program: Sage’s global sales and international marketing programs work to increase international reach by attracting authors and users from across the globe.
  • Rights and permissions: Our dedicated legal department will deal with copyright and permissions on your behalf as well as providing guidance on issues of plagiarism.
  • Publishing ethics and Research Integrity: The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) is a forum for editors and publishers of peer reviewed journals to discuss issues related to the integrity of work submitted to their journals. Sage endorses COPE’s principles and most of our journals benefit from a COPE membership. Sage has an Ethics and Quality Committee to ensure that we are following industry ethical best practices and able to lend advice to our partners. We have also committed to growing our internal Research Integrity team to support editors as potential ethics concerns arise and identify problematic papers early in the publishing process. Visit our Publication ethics policies area for more information on Sage’s approach.

Our aim is to be more than just your publisher. Partnering with Sage is a true collaboration based on mutual understanding of what we both aim to achieve and open sharing of ideas. We seek to thoroughly understand your journal and to work with you to implement a flexible approach to help you meet your editorial team’s goals.
